N7UP. How many times will Luffy doing the exact same thing make me cry my eyes out? It never gets old. I suppose because itâs such a warm and powerful stance he takes, to inspire those to fight for themselves and when they are strong enough to do that, fight alongside them. Heâs done that since he met Coby and punched him for being a wimp but fought Alvida for him once he told her off. As Luffy does what is not expected, I think we come to expect him to deny such things as his fleet or this alliance, he sees the world in a unique way and dives straight forward and that makes his approach unorthodox. Yet still, the question was why? I had to ponder it, I wasnât sure. Realizing it was for Momonosuke to choose to fight for himself made for a really beautiful scene. One which encompassed three things that came together to make me cry. The first was that Nami made me laugh the hardest I have ever laughed at a money joke. I donât normally audibly chuckle at greedy Nami with few exceptions, but in this case it was the subversion of my expectations which had me laugh incredibly loud. Luffy stopped Nami from comforting Momonosuke and then refused the deal, as I was wondering why, Nami agreed with Luffy. It came off like she realized the truth that Luffy saw and I started to be impressed with her. She understood Luffy in a way no one else did and she was supporting him! For her to turn from this impressive figure giving a speech to âIâm going to negotiateâ like the money demon she is was what got me. And as you may know, to insert comedy into touching or sad scenes only makes the emotion kick in all the more due to contrasting it with the prior laughter. The second was that I cared for Momonosuke for the first time beyond being a prop that made the samurai stand out as a family, his voice acting was excellent, and the way he walked to Luffy crying and thinking about all the suffering heâs been through before declaring both his will and his weakness was just so good. No matter how hard it is, he wants to bring down the man who killed his parents. It was a human expression of futility and anger and sadness and determination, it came off strong. And the third component which hit me was that I, for the first time ever, saw Luffy in a new light. I saw Momonosuke as Luffy when he was a kid. When he was crying and declaring with Ace that they would live with no regrets. That they would be free and fight for what they wanted no matter how scary it was. And of course Luffy would want to help people in those shoes. Of course Luffy would want to speed up the process for any kid that he could relate with. Itâs no surprise that struggling will power and dreams/ambitions are the things Luffy sees and understands perfectly. This mix of humanizing Momonosukeâs struggle, thinking back to Luffyâs past, and laughing very hard moments earlier was like such an explosion of emotion. It may have been less than a chapter in manga, but to build an entire episode around a discussion of issues and a dialogue over forming an alliance is totally my kind of thing. It's purposeful and creates a strong sense of style. As of now, the samurai have Luffy and his fleet alongside them. The samurai and Law, characters who are some of the most endearing in One Piece have now been etched together into fate making post time skip, with very recurrent enemies and allies, feel as if it has more continuity than ever. It was emotional and we finally understood in full force what the goal of the disgraced samurai is. To avenge Oden by killing the shogun who rules and Kaido. And to open Wano which is disclosed from entry and exit, to link it with the rest of the world. This is the kind of One Piece I love!!!
